City News Blog: Rewis appointed Director of Community and Economic Development | Department restructured to include two division heads


LAKELAND, Florida (December 6, 2021) | City Manager Shawn Sherrouse appointed Brian Rewis as Director of Community and Economic Development during December 6e Meeting of the municipal commission. Rewis has held the position of Acting Director for the past six months. Sherrouse said, “Brian has done a fantastic job over the past six months as Acting Director of the Department. He has proven his leadership in guiding the department as we have experienced unprecedented growth and he continues to be an advocate for our clients. Brian is over 18 with the City of Lakeland, and he’s worked his way up the ranks in the department. As Director, I have full confidence that he will continue to provide the highest levels of public service.

The Community and Economic Department is also being restructured to include two separate divisions. Sherrouse said, “The restructuring will allow us to better serve our customers and provide new opportunities to meet the growing needs of the community. The ministry will have an economic development division which will be headed by Alis Drumgo, who was director of the community redevelopment agency. His new title will be that of Deputy Director of Economic Development. Teresa Maio will oversee community development operations as the new Deputy Director of Community Development. She is the director of planning and housing and has worked for the city since 2009. Sherrouse said: “Teresa will focus on planning, transportation, construction services and housing as deputy director of community development. while Alis will focus on high quality development. This relocation will allow the Town of Lakeland to continue its highly successful redevelopment efforts while creating new development opportunities that will support and increase Lakeland’s future economic viability.

Rewis was first hired by the City of Lakeland on June 2, 2003, as the Director of the Code Enforcement Division. He was promoted to Deputy Director of Community and Economic Development on December 23, 2018. He has served as Acting Director of Community and Economic Development since June 7, 2021. Rewis said: “I have been truly honored and blessed to have been invited to serve as Acting Director of Community and Economic Development and I am very happy to be appointed Director of the Department. I look forward to continuing to serve the community and we have a great team of talented professionals in place, ready to provide the exceptional quality of life our community deserves.

The Director of Community and Economic Development will report directly to the Deputy City Manager, Nicole Travis. Rewis will assume all the functions, responsibilities and authority of the Director of Community and Economic Development effective December 6.e. He will receive an annual salary of $ 147,000. As Deputy Director of Community Development, Maio will receive an annual salary of $ 130,000. As Deputy Director of Economic Development, Drumgo will receive an annual salary of $ 120.00.
