Interim President Dr. Andrew Agwunobi to leave UConn

On Friday, UConn announced that the interim president and current CEO of UConn Health, Dr. Andrew Agwunobi, will be leaving school effective February 20, 2022. Agwunobi left college to work in the private sector, taking a job at Humana, a health services company. , where he will serve as president of the company’s home solutions business.

Agwunobi was officially named interim president in July 2021, replacing Thomas Katsouleas, who served as president of UConn from 2019 to 2021. Agwunobi led the school through another year impacted by COVID-19 while maintaining a role important as CEO of UConn Health.

With Agwunobi’s resignation, UConn is expected to appoint Radenka Maric, vice president for research, innovation and entrepreneurship, as interim president at the next board meeting on Jan. 26. Maric will become the second female president in school history, joining Susan Herbst, who served as president from 2011 to 2019.

Dr. Bruce Liang, the current dean of the UConn School of Medicine, will take over as interim CEO of UConn Health. The new roles of Liang and Maric will take effect on February 1.

According to the school and board chairman Dan Toscano, UConn will immediately begin a nationwide search for a president, with the goal of finding a new president by the fall. The Board will likely appoint a Research Advisory Committee for the President and a small Steering Committee in the coming weeks.

It’s never ideal to have such frequent turnover at the highest levels of an organization, but Agwunobi’s departure appears to be one where he pursues his interests in healthcare and can escape the more public spotlight that comes with being the president of a flagship university. The next president will need to provide a sense of stability from the start and likely navigate another year of COVID-19 and work closely with the state to ensure their needs are met.
