The Newcastle United Blog | Where did Federico Fernandez go – We need him

Many fans, ourselves included, think that Federico Fernandez is our best centre-back with Fabian Schar.

But he has hardly played under Eddie Howe, although Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe has been lyrical about the former Argentina international (32 caps 3 goals), who will be 33 this month. next.

Howe talked about his professionalism and the example he sets for our young players.

And Fernandez has plenty of Premier League experience, having played five seasons for Swansea in the Premier League and 118 games for them, before joining in August 2108.

In the previous three seasons he played 83 times for Newcastle, scoring two goals.

This season he has started just five games and came on as a substitute in two more games – one being the only win and clean sheet we have had – against Burnley.

It was to strengthen the defense in the second half, and it succeeded.

So we wonder what the current status of this player is, although Fernandez doesn’t seem to be back in training yet, after the injury he picked up last month.

At the time, he was described by Eddie Howe as follows:

“We lost Federico Fernandez to injury, we don’t know the extent of that injury yet.”

“He’s probably going to miss the majority of games over the festive period, I think.”

Well, he’s missed all the holiday games but maybe he can be fit for the match after Leeds – who are at home to Everton on February 8 after a hot weather training session in Saudi Arabia.

Eddie Howe could do much worse than playing Fernandez as a centre-back in the Newcastle squad.

We just keep losing goals, like in yesterday’s home game against Watford, and we should at least play our best centre-backs – like Fernandez – when they’re fit.

We don’t think Jamaal Lascelles deserves his place in the team at the moment, entirely based on his recent performances.

What do you think?
