A belated Christmas blog

Well over Christmas week, we forgot to submit our Christmas blog. But why can’t the joy of Christmas continue into the new year? So to a Happy New Year 2022 and an extended Christmas!

I thought it would be fun to discuss the influence of plants on Christmas. Until you take the time to contemplate them, most of us do not realize the importance of plants and spiritual festivals. There’s Palm Sunday, Easter Sunday, and Easter lilies, but Christmas covers more plants than all of them combined. I don’t know the whole story and I’m sure we could dig it up, but that’s not my point today. I just want to point out how plants add value to our revered days.

Of course, the Christmas tree crowns Christmas, so we’ll start there. Let’s work our way down. There is also Mistletoe, the plant with the power of love? Or at least kisses! But there are even more Christmas plants.

Recently my wife acquired four different colors of Christmas cactus. She has a little thing for houseplants. Amaryllis is another plant reserved for Christmas celebrations. When it comes to decorating for Christmas, we can include so much more. The holly, which unfortunately doesn’t grow here, has those thick, shiny leaves and red berries that make it a very attractive display. We also use spruce, pine, fir and cedar for wreaths, garlands and other decorations. Even branches of white birch and redbark dogwood have been added in recent mixes. Let’s not forget the pine and spruce cones in these candle displays. We even made faux cranberry bunches and other festive fruits for decoration!. It makes me think about what draws us to plants to interact with and celebrate on holidays like Christmas.

The plants are nice for the most part but you have to go further. Conifers have a rich history and symbolizing eternal life, it is the tree with leaves all the time. My instinct tells me that plants embody life, growth and natural beauty. Most people can connect at least a little with this.

I hope this Christmas (or New Year) as you see the many plants of the season, you can be blessed with their life-enhancing beauty. I hope you can connect with their creator… our creator, and be grateful for your life.

Immanuel! God with us! Even the angels celebrated this with us.

Blessings and Merry Christmas too all from Falk Nurseries.
