The response to the Ukraine crisis from the people of Liverpool has been typically warm. Cabinet Member for Child Welfare Cllr Frazer Lake reflects on the caring spirit of the people of Liverpool and our urgent need for more foster families.

It has been so heartening to see our city’s response to the Ukraine crisis, with many people considering opening their homes to fleeing families.

It reminds me of the true spirit of people at Liverpool – warm, generous and ready to lend a hand to help those in need.

Along the same lines, we urgently need a wide range of foster families for a wide range of children.

Unfortunately, the number of children in our care has increased significantly (by 42% since 2016) and currently 8% of the 1,595 children in care in Liverpool are unaccompanied minors.

If becoming a Liverpool City Council host family is something you would like to consider, we will support you every step of the way.

Our reception service is non-profit and our priority is the well-being of our children and young people.

You will benefit from a dedicated social worker and family support worker, access to training, competitive skills and child allowance, council tax exemption and membership free to Lifestyles for the entire household.

If you could open your heart and your home to a child, whether they are fleeing a war or closer to home, we would love to hear from you.
