Everyone around you has a name, an identity and a story.
We often forget that there is more to other people than the faces we see on the surface. The collection TheStatehouseFile.com performed last week at the Indiana State Fair, “Faces at the Fair,” reminded me of that.
As I researched stories and talked with kids, parents, employees, and no doubt goats, I thought of these things:
How many of those people would have just been background characters to me?
Would I have started a conversation with them if it wasn’t my job?
What other amazing stories about people am I missing, just because we humans don’t stray too far from our own social circles?
And above all, wWhy wouldn’t those goats just tell me I could take them home with me?
But seriously, I’ve met so many amazing humans in the past week. They were nice. They opened up and told me about their family and their life.
They reminded me that it’s not just tiny words on a screen and blank faces walking down the Midway.
They are humans like me.
They deserve the same kindness, empathy and welcoming attitude that they all gave me.
So let this be a reminder to tell the pretty senior lady eating at the fair that you love her earrings. And compliment that weird girl pointing a camera at your child and tell her you love the pins on her bag.
