Instagram brings back the timeline

Soon, all users will be able to toggle the order of their Instagram feed between Home, Favorites, and Following, two of which are chronological.

Although already touched on before, in a video from Instagram manager Adam Mosseri describes the three new flow control options and how to switch between them.

  • Homepage – Similar to how Instagram is today, Home provides content ranked based on the interest the algorithm thinks you are in each post. Usually, the accounts you interact with the most will show at the top. We saw some Instagram test recommendations in the feed. Instagram says they’ll add more recommendations to the Home view over time.
  • Favorites – This option only displays posts from the account you choose as favorites. Perfect if you want to make sure you haven’t missed a thing from your close friends and family. You can choose who appears here by selecting Manage Favorites from the drop-down list.
  • Following – Like in the good old days, Follow displays a chronological list of posts from the accounts you follow.

This upcoming update is great news for all users. If you like the way Instagram is currently ordered, you can keep your feed on Homepage. If you’re following too many accounts and worried about missing posts from friends, skip to Favorites. For users like me who don’t follow too many accounts and want to see all of everyone’s posts, without any recommendations, Following brings back the traditional Instagram order.

The functionality is currently being tested with a small number of users. Mosseri doesn’t give a full deployment date, but says the full experience will be with all users in the first half of this year.
