Amazon: probably another difficult quarter

Wall Street is betting that Amazon will generate $137.6 billion in revenue during the holiday quarter, for modest implied growth of less than 10%. Beyond the fourth quarter, analysts expect sales growth to climb steadily to a high of 21% in about three quarters.

EPS is expected to land around $3.54, significantly lower than the $14.09 reached in the comparable quarter last year. This modest revenue figure reflects the challenges that Amazon is still likely to face this revenue season:

  • Post-pandemic shopping habits that no longer favor home shopping as much as they did in 2020 and early last year.
  • Supply chain challenges that could weigh on demand and eat away at revenue.
  • High labor costs, particularly inflated by this pandemic transition period.
