DETROIT, Mich. (WOOD) — In a blog recently published by DTE Energy on Empowering Michigan, the company warns of common pitfalls set by alternative gas providers that could snag the consumer with huge bills. Here in Michigan, residents can choose their natural gas supplier through a program called Gas Customer Choice. But some providers may offer too-good-to-be-true rates that will end up hurting the customer.
An example could be happening across the state right now. DTE says AGS companies sometimes offer extremely low summer rates and skyrocket those prices in the winter when homeowners use more gas, which can increase the bill astronomically. The blog offers a useful tool tool to compare prices across the state.
The company wants customers to know that their rates are regulated while AGS’s are not. And getting gas from AGS doesn’t change where the gas comes from. These companies use DTE transmission and delivery lines to deliver to homes across the state. So be extra careful when reviewing the bill, the blog states, “Your natural gas bill will show the gas cost recovery charge, which is the cost to DTE for the natural gas you use. Note that we do not mark up this cost – we simply charge what we ourselves have paid for the gas. If you are served by an alternative gas supplier (AGS), your bill will show the name of the company providing your natural gas service and the price they charge you for their gas.
Currently, approximately 100,000 DTE gas customers use AGS calibrators and more than half of them pay double the DTE gas rate. Find out how to find the most affordable natural gas by reading the blog, here.
