Newcastle United Blog | Expert believes Newcastle will be in damage limitation mode on Sunday

BBC expert Mark Lawrenson gave his predictions for this weekend’s Premier League matches. It’s a light job for Lawro as half of the games have been postponed.

However, Newcastle are in action against Manchester City at St. James’ Park on Sunday. Unsurprisingly, Lawrenson predicts a 3-0 loss to the league’s current leaders.

Here is his opinion on this match:

Manchester City seem to have found this difficult at St James’ Park in recent years for a variety of reasons and they have yet to dismantle Newcastle there as they have demolished most of the teams at one point or another under Pep Guardiola.

This time, I think they will find it much easier. City have shown against Leeds what form they find themselves in, as Newcastle enter the game after successive defeats to Leicester and Liverpool.

I think the Magpies will end the week with another loss and just hope they don’t do more damage to their goal difference.

Howe’s philosophy is to enter every game with the goal of winning. He hatched a plan at Liverpool that saw Newcastle keep a chance until a late goal put the game out of reach.

He will consider a similar approach for this one, but hopefully without the mistakes that continue to cost Newcastle dearly.

Manchester City are coming out of a 7-0 dismantling of Leeds at the Etihad. They will be motivated to keep their place at the top of the table with Liverpool and Chelsea also in action on Sunday.

Newcastle have not performed well so far in our difficult period to end the year with two losses in a row. It will take an almost perfect performance to stop this trend and get a result on Sunday.
