Newcastle delivered a committed performance in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United last night. It was a performance worthy of victory but some missed opportunities probably cost us 2 points.
Unfortunately, lost points aren’t the only cost of the night. Callum Wilson, Allan Saint-Maximin and Ryan Fraser were forced to leave due to injuries. Wilson’s seems particularly worrying.
The mail reports that inside Newcastle camp fears are that Wilson has torn his calf. That would put our star striker on the sidelines for months. Saint-Maximin’s injury is not considered as serious, but also involves his calf while Fraser was taken out with a hamstring problem.
Newcastle have already been hit with a mix of injuries, suspensions and Covid ahead of the game. Howe was forced to name just 8 substitutes, including 2 goalies, as Ciaran Clark, Karl Darlow, Joe Willock and Matt Ritchie were all unexpected omissions.
Howe was already without Fede Fernandez, Jamal Lewis, Paul Dummett and Isaac Hayden, who was suspended. This wave of injuries and illnesses now calls Thursday’s game at Everton into question.
Howe was asked about having enough players for Thursday night after last night’s game. Here is his response:
“I think it’s 13 plus a goalie to have enough players for a game. We are going to be dangerously close to that number.
“We will try to play the game. We will see what the situation is with the injured players that we have and the Covid that we have in the camp.
“Then it will be a simple process to count the players. “
There is going to be some angst over the next few days as we await official confirmation of Wilson’s injury. It almost seems certain that he will not be available for the critical January period with must-see matches against Southampton, Watford and Leeds.
