BBC expert Mark Lawrenson has seen his predictions for the Premier League Boxing Day matches as well as Newcastle’s match against Manchester United on Monday.
Sadly, there have been a few other games postponed due to Covid as Leeds at Liverpool, Watford at Wolves and Everton at Burnley will not take place as originally planned.
Lawrenson again predicts defeat at Newcastle. This time around, he expects us to lose 2-0 at St. James’ Park to the Red Devils.
After setting out Eddie Howe’s colossal task to save Newcastle, here’s some of Lawrenson’s take on the game:
I think this game will also end with another loss for the Magpies. Yes, they were competitive at Anfield, and they also had a big decision against them against Manchester City, but the facts are they just weren’t good enough defensively to shoot anything out of either. other match.
I expect a similar story here. Manchester United have had a few weeks off since their last game due to a Covid-19 outbreak, but their training ground reopened this week and Ralf Rangnick will have worked them hard. They will go to St James’ Park to win.
Manchester United have not played since their 1-0 victory at Norwich on December 11. It will be a 16 day period between matches. Although they are well rested, it is not an optimal period between games.
Although Ralf Rangnick has been at the helm for just under a month, this extra time will have been used to anchor his philosophy in his team. He has started well by winning his two Premier League games so far.
Newcastle, on the other hand, will have had 8 days to prepare which is more than enough, especially since Christmas falls during this time. Hopefully Newcastle will be a bit more specific to start the game.
The Magpies are on a three-game losing streak with two games before the vital winter window opens. Although we’ll see what happens with our trip to Everton on Thursday as they had a Covid outbreak resulting in their match at Burnley being postponed.
Newcastle could allay some fears in the transfer market with a few wins before January. Our outlook would be much brighter with 14 or 16 points on the board versus 10. While it’s a tough task, it’s not out of the realm of possibilities.
Tears For Fears duo Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal also participated in the predictions, which will release a new album in February. The pair are big Manchester United fans and, of course, predict a Man United victory.
However, Orzabal had the following to say about Newcastle:
I can only go there with a win for us, but I hope Eddie Howe is right. He looks like a great guy and Newcastle are a great place and their fans are amazing.
