Newcastle need swift action once the winter window opens in a few days. As it stands, the trip to Southampton is still underway for Sunday, although it is definitely in jeopardy with the squad decimated by injury and illness.
If this game continues, the next Championship game will not take place until January 15th, when Watford comes to St. James’ Park. The weekend in between is the third round of the FA Cup when we face Cambridge United, also at St. James’ Park.
The goal could be to have new recruits and prepare for the Hornets in mid-January. Ideally, there will be signings next week, leaving a few weeks in bed before Watford’s game.
The telegraph Luke Edwards has an exclusive claiming that Newcastle hope to secure a deal for main target Kieran Trippier next week. The movement from the right-back isn’t the only one Newcastle aim to complete early in the window
Here’s some of what Edwards wrote in his report:
Encouragingly, it is understood that Newcastle are confident they can sign signings early in the window and have been working hard on deals for several weeks.
“The decision to sign Trippier is believed to be the furthest along, although there is still work to be done and there are plenty of other targets.”
Another top goal that comes to mind is Lille center-back Sven Botman. Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the 21-year-old is one of our main targets with Trippier. Landing both players early next month would be superb.
Edwards also talks about Newcastle’s need for a new striker following Callum Wilson’s calf injury. Newcastle have redesigned transfer plans with one or two attackers now seen as top priority.
There are several issues Newcastle will face next month. Not only will it be a difficult task to convince the top players to join a relegation scrum, Newcastle are being offered inflated prices due to our immense wealth.
It goes with the new territory. This club just need to improve next month and embark on a wild race to avoid a stagnant fall in the league.
