Scores, updates for Generals vs Stallions

The USFL season kicks off with the inaugural game featuring the New Jersey Generals and Birmingham Stallions at Protective Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama. Follow updates here or watch them live on NBC and Peacock. See below for more information on how to watch.

This first USFL contest of the season will feature the North Division Generals and the South Division Stallions. The generals are led by the head coach mike riley, who was a former defensive back for the University of Alabama from 1971 to 1974 and has more than 40 seasons of experience as a head coach at the professional and collegiate levels. Riley’s coaching journey took him to the Chargers as well as the CFL, where he won two Gray Cups with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Jump Holtz will lead the opposite sideline for the stallions. Holtz is the son of former head coach Lou Holtz, who spent 11 seasons at the helm of Notre Dame and won a national championship in 1988. Skip spent the last nine seasons at Louisiana Tech where he finished with a 64-50 overall record. Made his professional coaching debut in the USFL.

Stallions Quarterback Alex McGough was a seventh-round selection by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2018 NFL Draft, despite having no NFL playing experience. McGough attended Florida International University, where he finished his career as the program’s all-time leader in passing yards and passing touchdowns. In order to learn the Stallion Playbook, McGough used approximately 200 color-coded flash cards.

As the host team of the USFL this season, the Stallions continue Birmingham’s professional football history that dates back to the 1970s and includes the original USFL Stallions in 1983-85. Players on both sides also have notable ties to the host city or the state of Alabama. QB Generals J’Mar Smith‘s father, Kenny Smith, played on the defensive line at Alabama and the Stallions were ruled out Peyton Ramzy grew about 25 minutes southwest of Protection Stadium.
