The Newcastle United Blog | Watts gets Premier League start as Kuol scores otherworldly goal

Kell Watts was the only young prospect to feature for his loan club on Saturday. The defender made his first league start by anchoring a three-man defensive line in Peterborough’s disheartening 3-2 defeat at Exeter City.

The clubs traded some excellent first-half goals before Ephron Mason-Clarke put Posh up 2-1 with a superb 81st-minute volley. Peterborough couldn’t hold on as Exeter staged a late comeback to take all the spoils.

Sam Nombe collected a cross as Watts and promising youngster Ronnie Edwards could not clear. The striker put the ball in the back of the net to make it 2-2 in the 86th minute.

Then in injury time, a pass split Posh’s back line with Jevani Brown running over the ball and fending it off for the 3-2 win. Despite the defeat, Peterborough remain 4th in the League One standings.

Matty Longstaff (hamstring) and Lucas De Bolle (blurred vision) continue to recover from their injuries. De Bolle is slowly returning to full training with Hamilton while Matty has missed more than a month with his hamstring injury.

Newcastle could have an absolute star on their hands in January. Garang Kuol scored a brace today for Central Coast Mariners against Macarther in his final game before leaving for Qatar with the Australian national team.

The 18-year-old, who has yet to start in the league for the Australian club, came on in the 55th minute for Paul Ayongo with a man and two goals. Central Coast Mariners won a 62nd-minute penalty but Jason Cummings couldn’t convert it.

Three minutes later, Kuol recovers the ball at the entrance to the area and enters the area. The teenager was brought down and given a penalty. Kuol nailed the kick through the middle to make it 2-1.

In the 72nd minute, Kuol scored an absolute stunner. He collected a cross in the area and from an impossible angle sent the ball into the top of the net to level the match. Unfortunately, Macarthur grabbed a winner in injury time.

Kuol’s contributions can be seen in the YouTube video below. His penalty streak starts at 1:50 while his goal is at 2:20.
