Women’s hockey team, Manika Batra, Shiva Thapa in action

Day one of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games is here with plenty of action involving the Indian athletes. The Games were declared open at the opening ceremony on Thursday, which showcased Birmingham’s rich culture and diversity.

Women’s T20 cricket makes its debut at these Games and India will face Australia in their opening match on Friday. The women’s hockey team also kicks off its campaign on Friday with its game against Ghana.

There are also some meetings between India and Pakistan on Friday. The badminton team will face Pakistan in the opening match of the mixed team event, while boxer Shiva Thapa will face Pakistan’s Suleman Baloch in the 63.5kg in the round of 16.

In terms of medal events on Friday, Pragnya Mohan and Sanjana Joshi are involved in the women’s triathlon while the men’s contingent includes Adarsh ​​MS, Vishwanath Yadav.

The table tennis team events also start on Friday. The Indian men’s team consists of Sharath Kamal, Gnanasekaran Sathiyan, Harmeet Desai, Sanil Shetty. The female team includes Manika Batra, Sreeja Akula, Reeth Rishya, Diya Chitale.

The swimming will see Kushagra Rawat (men’s 400m freestyle), Sajan Prakash (50m butterfly) and Srihari Nataraj (men’s 100m backstroke) go head-to-head in the heats. Rawat will be looking to qualify for the final of his event which will take place later today.

Anahat Singh, the 14-year-old squash player, will make her India debut on Friday. She is the youngest member of the Indian contingent at the Games. She will face Jada Ross in the Women’s Singles Round of 64 match.
